Lahore sealed ahead of march
* Nawaz, Shahbaz likely to be restricted at Raiwind * Containers placed at entry, exit points
LAHORE: The city police have sealed the city’s entry points by placing containers in the way, barring every type of vehicular traffic from entering the city, sources told Daily Times on Saturday.
They said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leaders Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif would be restricted from leaving their Raiwind residence to take part in the lawyers’ long march.
The city police sealed Multan Road by placing two containers at Jamber stop, which leads to Changa Manga, near Phulnager. The police placed two containers at Jamber to bar caravans and personal vehicles from exiting the city to Changa Manga.
They said police placed two containers at the Manga Mandi stop, to bar caravans or vehicles from going near the Sharifs’ farmhouse in Raiwind. The police placed two containers two kilometres from the Manga Mandi on Multan Road. The police placed two more containers five kilometres from Manga Mandi at Multan Road. Containers were also placed on both sides of the Kasur Road to stop protesters from entering the city. A large number of residents were suffering from the blockage at the Kahna stop, as the containers had completely blocked the road.
The railway gate at Shahdara (Imamia Colony) was also closed at both sides of the GT Road. The entry points of the Motorway, like Babu Sabu, Yateem Khana and Kala Shah Kaku were also closed.
Sources in the police said the police placed the containers at 10 am. They said heavy contingents of police had also been deployed at the spots. They said hundreds of police officials would be deployed at Raiwind Road to restrict the Sharifs from exiting the city and to prevent any caravan from approaching the Sharifs’ residence. Sources in the Motorway Police said the Motorway Police would place containers at the Faisalabad interchange and Pindi Bhattian late at night, adding that every vehicle on the motorway would be thoroughly searched to stop protesters from arriving in Islamabad. Rangers were also deployed in the city at the various sensitive places to maintain the law and order situation.
Sources in the Security superintendent of police (SP)’s office said about 2,500 police personnel would be deployed at The Mall on today (Sunday), adding that the police had set up 11 pickets across the city. They said 100 personnel and two inspectors would be deputed at each picket. abdul manan
